The arrest of Rosa María González in Venezuela has reopened one of Argentina’s most damaging crypto scandals, nearly four years after it first unraveled. González, identified by prosecutors as a central figure in the collapse of the investment scheme known as Generación Zoe, was detained in the city of San Cristóbal following an international police operation, bringing a long period of evasion to an abrupt end.

Authorities allege that González fled Argentina in the aftermath of Generación Zoe’s implosion, carrying with her 611 Bitcoin, now valued at approximately $56 million. At the time of the firm’s collapse in 2022, tens of thousands of investors were left facing heavy losses after being lured by promises of extraordinary returns and sophisticated trading technology that, investigators later concluded, never existed.

Generación Zoe marketed itself as a cutting-edge financial ecosystem, blending crypto trading, education, and investment products. Its pitch relied heavily on claims of proprietary algorithms and so-called “quantum” trading strategies capable of generating monthly returns far beyond anything seen in legitimate markets. In practice, prosecutors say, the operation followed the familiar mechanics of a Ponzi scheme, using incoming funds from new participants to pay earlier investors until the system inevitably collapsed.

González was not a peripheral player. According to court filings and testimony, she helped introduce the technical narrative that became central to the scheme’s appeal and appeared prominently in promotional materials. In recorded statements, she claimed the system could deliver monthly gains of up to 70%, a figure that proved irresistible to many retail investors navigating economic instability and inflation.

Her arrest comes roughly a year after Leonardo Cositorto, the founder and public face of Generación Zoe, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Cositorto has since called on González to cooperate with authorities, suggesting that her testimony could prove critical in tracing missing funds and potentially recovering assets for victims. Investigators, however, remain focused on González’s own role, which they argue went beyond promotion and extended into active participation in fraudulent activities.

Even after the collapse of Generación Zoe, González allegedly continued operating within crypto circles. Sources close to the investigation claim she attempted to launch a new investment scheme targeting Argentine clients, promising fixed monthly returns and using crypto transactions routed through foreign entities. While smaller in scale, the alleged effort reportedly resulted in additional losses, reinforcing concerns that the underlying behavior had not ceased.

Extraditing González to Argentina now presents a complex challenge. Diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela were severed in 2024, leaving no direct embassy presence and complicating formal legal cooperation. With intermediary channels recently withdrawn, authorities face uncertainty over how, or when, González might be transferred to stand trial.

High-yield promises, opaque technology claims, and charismatic promoters continue to exploit gaps in financial literacy and regulation.
